In a sentence
FoldNotes is a Markdown notes app that lets you fold a long document down to its outline, hoist one section to write in, and link and tag everything, with every note kept as a plain file you own.
What makes it different
- A native Markdown outliner. Fold any heading or indented section, and hoist one chapter into a room of its own. A Mac app written for the Mac.
- Tasks stay where you wrote them. A task lives in the note you wrote it in, next to the thinking behind it. The Task Board, database views and daily notes gather them all without moving them.
- Everything built in, zero plugins. Tags, backlinks, the graph, database views, the Task Board and Manuscript Bind all come in the box.
- Whole books in one note. All of Moby-Dick, more than 200,000 words, in a single note that folds, hoists and scrolls without fuss.
- Mac and iPhone/iPad together. The iPhone and iPad app is free and syncs through iCloud.
- Plain files, always. Every note is a
.mdfile you own. Back up however you like, open them anywhere. - For writers. Zen mode, typewriter scrolling, paragraph and sentence focus, parts-of-speech highlighting, and Manuscript Bind, which assembles a book into PDF, Word or EPUB in one step.
- Bike outlines, both ways. FoldNotes opens and edits Bike outline files in place, so an outline made in Bike, Jesse Grosjean’s Mac outliner, can be written into on an iPhone or iPad and stay a Bike file.
- Automation. Shortcuts and Siri actions, a command-line tool, and an MCP server for AI assistants.

About the developer
FoldNotes is made by Stephen, who started programming on a Commodore 64 in the early 1980s, when it first came out. After more than forty years of writing code and taking notes, he built the app he had always wanted: one place to think in writing, keep long documents in shape, and stay on top of what needs doing. FoldNotes is made in Australia by Foldsoft Pty Ltd.
